Subway Summit Unites Area Universities In Education Dialogue

The difference between a proven fact and a personal belief might seem obvious. But when trying to articulate this difference, it turns out that many people are in stark disagreement. That is because the concept of “fact” is, in fact, very fuzzy, said Mitchell Rabinowitz, Ph.D., during the fifth annual Subway Summit on Cognition and Education Research, which was held on Jan. 27 at the Lincoln Center campus.

Rabinowitz, the chair of the psychological and educational services division in the Graduate School of Education (GSE) and associate director of GSE’s Center for Learning in Unsupervised Environments (CLUE), was among presenters from five area graduate schools of education at the daylong event.

Sponsored by CLUE, the conference gathered students, faculty members, and administrators from Fordham, Columbia, New York University, the City University of New York’s Graduate Center, and Rutgers to discuss their latest research in cognitive psychology/science and education.

Every Leader Is An Artist: Mastering the 12 Skills of Visionary Leadership makes the compelling case that many of the attributes that make a person a great leader- and are in an entirely different category from personality- are those that make someone a superior artist, as well, among them intention, focus, authenticity, skill, and imagination.

Like artists, leaders put their work on display every day, in front of judgemental, and discriminating, audiences. Like artists, leaders strive to be better and perfect over time. It isn't something you wholly acquire with the receipt of a graduate degree or corporate title. Nor is leadership a skill that can be honed through osmosis: passive observation and tenure. Excellence in any craft requires greater dedication than that.

The Center for Educational Partnerships at the Graduate School of Education consists of a group of scholars and practitioners who are committed to applying cutting-edge educational research in the service of K-12 teachers, administrators, students and parents, as well as to education and government agencies, to enable all children to achieve and succeed academically.

GSE is very proud of the Center's recent achievements, and those of the schools they support, including:

NEW contract won for the New York City Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (RBERN). Through this contact, the Center will bring their work with the bilingual community to scale and expand their work in the Bronx to all five boroughs. The new RBERN augments the Center's work with English language learners, and their teachers, administrators and families through standing initiatives, including the Bilingual School Psychology Support Center, the Long Island/Westchester Bilingual/ESL Teacher Leadership Academy, and the Partnership Support Organization/Children First Network (PSO/CFN). The extensive bilingual/ESL course offerings at GSE support educators at all levels from pre-service to doctoral studies, including bilingual, ESL and special education extension programs. RBERN is already hard at work from its main office just outside the Rose Hill campus and will be opening satellite offices in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Opera superstar Placido Domingo conducted New York City schoolchildren at Public School 129 in Harlem (a GSE PSO/CFN School) and Public School 152 in Flatbush, at a fundraiser for their after-school music program. The program, called Harmony, requires students to spend two hours every day either learning their instrument or playing with the school orchestra, augmented by at-home practice. P.S. 129 principal Odelphia Pierre believes that this teaches students to focus and stay on task, which helps them with academic subjects. "It builds up their self-esteem," she added. "Now they know that if they set their minds to something they will be successful." On Wednesday, January 18th, under Domingo's leadership, the students played Handel's Hallelujah Chorus and selections from Antonin Dvorak's New World Symphony arranged for young performers. Graduate School of Education Welcomes Visiting Scholar From Serbia

GSE welcomed a new addition this week—someone who traveled more than 4,000 miles to get to Fordham. Ivana Petrovic, Ph.D., an assistant professor of industrial/organizational psychology at the University of Belgrade, Serbia, joins the Division of Psychological and Educational Services as a visiting scholar through the Junior Faculty Development Program, administered by the American Councils for International Education (ACIE).

The first ACIE scholar to visit Fordham, Petrovic will spend the next four months at the Lincoln Center campus researching and writing about applied and multicultural psychology. She will deliver lectures and participate in psychology courses to gain a better understanding of higher education in America and discuss Serbian higher education with Fordham students and faculty members.

Alumni Publications: "Symbolic Logic and the Binomial Expansion" By Richard Forringer (GSE '97)

In December 2011, mathematician and educator Richard "Dick" Forringer (MSE in Curriculum &Teaching, '97) published his second book, Symbolic Logic and the Binomial Expansion: Two Math Projects, which was released by Signalman Publishing.

While Symbolic Logic and the Binomial Expansion are subjects that are often mentioned in High School and College math courses, the two projects contained in this book have been carefully developed to help the student achieve a more in-depth understanding of these concepts. The projects are designed to be done independently or they can be incorporated into the curriculum of any math course from second semester algebra and beyond. Students who complete these projects will gain a stronger appreciation of what it means to think logically and they will see how two seemingly unrelated areas of study connect in ways that strengthen both.

Symbolic logic (also known as Mathematical Logic) is foundational to many fields of study such as computer science and engineering. Those who have an understanding of symbolic logic and the binomial expansion will be better prepared for further courses of study in mathematics, science, and engineering.

Dr. Bill Baker On Competition in Internet-Age Media

In an article entitled "Competition Doesn't Have To Mean A Race To The Bottom In The News Media," Dr. Bill Baker (Claudio Aquaviva Chair of Education and Journalist in Residence) discusses 21st century changes in media coverage by major networks, and the ways in which managers can respond to the increased competition with journalistic integrity:

"Responding to the fierce competition of Internet-age media, the big three networks are changing up their nightly newscasts. For the first time in half a century, said the New York Times, viewers can expect a different version of the day’s events from the anchors at ABC, CBS, and NBC. The new content on offer at the big three and elsewhere in the media landscape offers a great lesson for managers in how to respond when the playing field is leveled and competition heats up."

GSE In the News: "New Fordham Grad Residency Program Promises Effective Teachers For Struggling Bronx Schools"

The new Fordham Teacher Residency Scholars Program was featuring in the New York Daily News yesterday:

"Fordham University is taking teaching to the next level by offering a competitive, intensive graduate residency program, starting this year. The Teacher Residency Scholars Program in Adolescence Education was piloted last year in a Manhattan high school, but it was given a new lease on life when the state Department of Education offered a $2.5 million grant for grad students to teach in struggling city schools.

“We’re hopefully training people who would become teachers in those very schools,” said Marshall George, chair of curriculum and teaching at Fordham’s Graduate School of Education. “Part of our mission is service to those in most need, so it fits right in with that.”

NEW Fordham Teacher Residency Scholars Program

The Fordham University Graduate School of Education is pleased to announce the NEW Fordham Teacher Residency Scholars Program in Adolescence Education! This unique Master of Science in Teaching (MST) program is available to prospective students interested in initial teacher certification in Adolescence Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, Mathematics, Physics, Special Education OR Social Studies. Combining academic coursework with a sustained residency in a classroom setting, candidates engage in clinical assignments at high needs New York City public schools, where they learn through hands-on experience how to effectively impact the growth and achievement of their students.

The 15 month scholarship-funded program* provides the following:

$30,000 living expense stipend
20% reduction in tuition
$10,000 in tuition scholarship
Master of Science in Teaching (MST) degree and eligibility for New York State initial teacher certification
Job placement assistance through GSE Career Services and our community of partner schools through the GSE Partnership Support Organization/Children First Network (PSO/CFN), encompassing 31 public schools in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn

*Note: Applicants for the scholarship are required to provide a written commitment to seek employment as teachers in high-needs New York State schools following completion of the program.

Publications: Joseph Porzio On Poematics

In December 2011, Joseph A. Porzio, Team Associate for the Partnership Support Organization/Children First Network (PSO/CFN) at the Center for Educational Partnerships at GSE, published a book entitled Poematics: Learn, Understand and Enjoy Elementary School Mathematics Through Poetry.

The collection offers a variety of mathematical poems designed to complement mathematical concepts and to ease the path to learning for students everywhere. Teachers may use Poematics as a means to motivate students, integrate mathematical subject matter, and formulate daily lesson plans. Poematics supports key components of the mathematical practices found in the Common Core State Standards through its focus, not only on content strands, but on process strands. It also highlights communication, connections, and representation. Poematics provides parents and educators at the elementary level with unique means to have their students meet both the academic and emotional challenges related to high achievement in mathematics.

GSE and Bloomingdale's Team Up to Help Promote Catholic Schools

Schools exist to educate students, open their minds to local and global issues and prepare them to be citizens of the world. None of that is possible, however, if a school cannot draw students in the first place.

To address this basic challenge, the Center for Catholic School Leadership and Faith-Based Education, part of the Graduate School of Education, and Bloomingdale’s co-sponsored an in-service training session on December 20th, regarding the marketing of schools.

Thirty Catholic elementary school principals from the Archdiocese of New York, the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Diocese of Rockville Centre gathered at Bloomingdale’s corporate headquarters on 60th Street in New York City to gain entrepreneurial and marketing skills geared toward promoting their schools.

Alumni in the News: John Sprang (GSE '89) and Elizabeth Hutchinson (FCRH '77, GSE '01)

John Sprang, Jr. (MSE in Administration & Supervision, '89) has been named Interim Finance Director of Avon Public Schools. Sprang started the position right in the throes of budget season and is acclimating himself to their new accounting system, Budget Sense which charts the projected revenues and the expenditures side by side. He is temporarily replacing Gary Franzi, who is leaving his 15-year post to explore other career options, but who has been helping him with the transition, which, according to Sprang is "going pretty smoothly...Certainly [Avon] has a great reputation in Connecticut and across the country. I've known for a long time some of the great things that are going here." Sprang remains enthusiastic about the chance to continue the success of the district "and get into helping support the new beginning the superintendent mentioned and some of the things that are soon to be accomplished."

The Mattapoisett Historical Society is pleased to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Hutchinson (FCRH '77, GSE MST in Childhood Education '01) as curator of the Mattapoisett Museum. She will replace retiring Bette Roberts who announced her plans to retire at the annual meeting of the Society this past September.
Ms. Hutchinson is well qualified, having served in various capacities at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City, the Mystic Seaport in Connecticut and Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. She is also a certified teacher and taught for six years at the Wheeler School in Providence.

Alumni in the News: Literacy Coach Alicia Dunne Luick (GSE '03)

As the Summit Public Schools literacy coach for pre-kindergarten through fifth grades, Alicia Luick’s role is to lend support to classroom teachers primarily in the areas of reading and writing.

“I work with the teachers in developing curriculum, planning lessons and units, identifying student needs through assessments, and targeting instructions to meet those needs,” Luick said. “I also keep the teachers informed on the most recent research and pedagogy in the literacy field and assist them in translating this information for application in the classroom.”

Luick, who received her MSE in Administration & Supervision from GSE in 2003 and has been an educator for the past 15 years, joined the Summit staff in May 2010 to fill the newly developed position of literacy coach. The position was funded the first year by the Summit Educational Association and this year is being supported by the federal Education Jobs Fund.

Alumni Publications: Elizabeth Stieglitz Tarras (GSE'11) in the New York Times School Book

Elizabeth Stieglitz Tarras, who graduated from GSE in 2011 with an M.S.T. in Adolescence English, recently published an op-ed piece for the The New York Times School Book that delves into the New York City Department of Educations policies that lead many large public high schools in the Bronx to fail. As a former Teacher for America corps member and an English Teacher teacher at Jane Addams High School for Academic Careers in the South Bronx from 2009-2011, regarding restructuring per NYC DOE mandates that have not improved the School's performance,Tarras observed:

" Jane Addams is the product of systemic issues in Education Department leadership and oversight, and department instituted reform that continues to lack focus on neighborhood-school development".

Live from GSE: National Geographic on Teenage Brains

Live from GSE, our Student Ambassador, Seth, a current student in the Counseling and Personnel Services (School Counseling) program, has suggested an article from National Geographic entitled "Teenage Brains" by David Dobbs.

"Although you know your teenager takes some chances, it can be a shock to hear about them. One fine May morning not long ago my oldest son, 17 at the time, phoned to tell me that he had just spent a couple hours at the state police barracks. Apparently he had been driving 'a little fast.' What, I asked, was 'a little fast?' Turns out the product of my genes and loving care, the boy-man I had swaddled, coddled, cooed at, and then pushed and pulled to the brink of manhood, had been flying down the highway at 113 miles an hour. 'That's more than a little fast,' I said."

The first full series of scans of the developing adolescent brain- a National Institute of Health (NIH) project that studied over a hundred young people as they grew up during the 1990s- showed that our brains undergo a massive reorganization between our 12th and 25th years. The brain doesn't actually grow very much during this period. It has already reached 90 percent of its full size by the time a person is six, and a thickening skull accounts for most head growth afterward. But as we move through adolescence, the brain undergoes extensive remodeling, resembling a network and wiring upgrade."

GSE Celebrates NCATE Accreditation Renewal

The Graduate School of Education (GSE) has been reaccredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) after overhauling its system of evaluating students.

NCATE, which is responsible for evaluating 623 teacher-education organizations in the United States, announced on November 10 that it approved the school’s accreditation, which is subject to renewal every five years.

Unlike previous rounds, GSE had to develop a school-wide assessment system that helped form the University assessment system used during its Middle States evaluation process.

James D. Hennessy, Ph.D., dean of GSE, said the bar for accreditation has been rising. He noted that the school has greatly advanced how it assesses students and graduates, and aggregates data about the skills, attitudes and knowledge they have developed.

Carole M. Berotte Joseph (GSE '75) Assumes Presidency of Bronx Community College

GSE alumnae Carole M. Berotte Joseph was recently appointed President of Bronx Community College (BCC). Joseph, who moved over to BCC in July from Massachusetts Bay Community College, or MassBay, is enjoying coming back to New York City, where she earned a bachelor’s from York College at the City University of New York, a master’s from Fordham University (in bilingual education) and a doctorate from New York University. Joseph became the first Haitian-American president of a U.S. college when she was selected in 2005 to lead MassBay.

“I am very happy about being back in New York,” says Joseph. “I was a student here. I was a faculty member at City [College] for more than two decades. And then I worked as an administrator at Hostos Community College in the South Bronx, so it’s a place that I know, and it’s a place that I love. It’s a place that I really understand.”

"Careers in Music: Hitting the Right Note" was sponsored by the Graduate School of Education and the Center for Communication. It was moderated by Danny Goldberg, president of GoldVE Entertainment and the author of Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock and Rolls Business (Gotham, 2008).

Panelists included Maureen Lloren, head of publishing at Glassnote Entertainment Group; Edward Vetri, CEO/president of Wind-Up Entertainment; and Peter LoFrumento, senior vice president of corporate communications for Universal Music Group.

The Valerie A. Rowe Endowed Scholarship Fund Celebrates First Recipient

On November 7th, the Graduate School of Education and the Fordham Office of Development hosted a reception to celebrate the first recipient of an endowed scholarship made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Valerie A. Rowe, an alumnae and former professor at GSE, with her husband, Jack Rowe (a professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and a former chairman and CEO of Aetna Inc.).

Rowe enjoyed a four-decade career as an educator that began near Rochester, New York, in the Rush-Henrietta Central School District, and ended at GSE, where she received her doctoral degree in 1996 and was a faculty member until 2010. Last fall, she and her husband made a $530,000 gift to the University to establish an endowed scholarship at GSE. It is one of the largest gifts ever received by the school in its 95-year history.

The Valerie A. Rowe Endowed Scholarship Fund will support students in the Master of Science in Teaching (M.S.T.) program, which Rowe coordinated on Fordham’s Westchester campus.

“As a faculty member, I knew we didn’t have a big pool of scholarship money to attract the best students, and I wanted to help change that,” Rowe said. “I focused on M.S.T. students because they go through the program so quickly. They want to become teachers, and the majority of them have worked in other fields. It takes a lot of nerve to switch careers, so I want to make it easier for them to go through the program and make that transition.”

Maria Teresa Castillo is the first recipient of the Scholarship. She began her undergraduate studies at Fordham in 2007 as a Dance major, and her love for dance, the arts and working with children motivated her to become a childhood education teacher through Fordham’s 5-Year Integrated Teacher Education Track. She is presently a student teacher in the Childhood Special Education Program where she is instilling in children the motivation to grow intellectually, artistically, and socially.

He credits Fordham's Edge4Vets (which helps veterans turn strengths from their military service into "tools" to meet the challenges of civilian life) in helping him succeed.

In her most recent article, "How To Survive Thanksgiving (When You Aren't Feeling Thankful)," she outlines strategies for getting through the festivities while dealing with depression:

"Picture it: Thanksgiving Day, 2011. You’ve just joined your family at the table to feast on turkey and stuffing when suddenly, a festive, well-meaning relative suggests that everyone go around the table and share something that they are thankful for. Ugh. If you are one of the millions of Americans who is suffering with depression, this may feel like an impossible, unanswerable question. If you’ve been feeling such deep despair that you haven’t been able to get out of bed for the last several days, then you probably feel that you don’t have anything to be thankful for. You’re probably just trying to get through the day. And you probably want to push your chair away from the table, tell your relative to mind his own business, and crawl back into bed.

Fortunately, Thanksgiving isn’t here just yet. So, let’s take a step back and think about what you might do to keep the holiday from worsening your already beleaguered emotional state."

Fordham Hosts Education Dean/New York Regents Meeting

The leaders of the institutions that train teachers came together on Monday, November 7th at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus to meet with Dr. Merryl Tisch, Chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents. The meeting, which was also attended by Dr. John King, New York State Commissioner of Education and New York area Deans of schools of education, was meant to address changes being proposed for teacher evaluation and preparation.

GSE Workshop Showcases Job Possibilities For Education Graduates

“With a little madness, you can cut the rope and be free.”

That bit of wisdom, paraphrased from the movie Zorba the Greek, inspired Anne Marie Santoro to eventually become a nationally recognized education expert and founder of From The Heart Communications. It is also the perfect phrase for people contemplating a graduate degree in education, she said on Nov. 3 at the Westchester campus.

Santoro delivered the keynote address at Careers for Educators: The Long and Winding Road: Stories of Extraordinary Career Paths, sponsored by the Fordham Graduate School of Education (GSE) and Career Services. A similar workshop was held two days earlier at the Lincoln Center campus, where Ron Thorpe, Ed.D., Vice President of WNET/Channel 13, spoke to participants.

Dr. Sheldon Marcus Publishes New Book

Dr. Sheldon Marcus, (Professor, Division of Educational Leadership, Administration & Policy) recently published Two Nobodies Speak Out: Our 150 Year Journey and Perspectives on Education, in collaboration with Dr. Philip D. Vairo.

The book traces the journey of two individuals who have spent their lives on both sides of the teacher/professor's desk. Between them, they went from attending kindergarten to being a college president, and in that journey, they held positions ranging from classroom teacher in the New York City public schools, every rank of the professional ladder, to almost every administrative position available in a university.

Since many more resumes are received than there are jobs in this market, the key to securing a position after graduation is to network early and network often.

Kids Supporting Kids, by Dr. Kathleen Tillman and Dr. Jonathan Rust, discusses children's reaction to death and loss and discusses a 10-stage process to help students deal with their feelings of loss and realize that they are not alone:

"All children react differently to death. Many times children who are grieving will look fine to outsiders. They may play with their friends, go to school and attend soccer practice without any difficulties. However, they may also experience unexplained moodiness, crying or temper tantrum. Children grieve differently than adults. However, it is important to remember that children do grieve, and their emotions are real...To help these students, consider conducting a grief and loss group. A grief and loss group can be broken down into 10 important stages; this model can take anywhere from eight to 15 session."

Lend a Hand, by Judi Schmitz, gives her personal account of becoming a Red Cross mental health volunteer. She details her experience completing the requirements to become a disaster mental health volunteer and her first deployment to the southern part of the country in response to a string of natural disasters:

"In the spring of this year, when the southern part of the country was hit with an unprecedented number of natural disasters, I received an e-mail from my Red Cross chapter looking for volunteers to deploy to the South to help with the aftermath. I didn't hesitate. I responded that I would be interested, although I had no idea if my school district would give me a temporary release or if I would have my husband's support to go."

Eight Elements of Effective School counselor-Principal Relationships, Dr. Chris Janson, discusses his recent study that examines the distinct perspectives of the school counselor-principal relationship. Janson outlines eight elements of an effective school counselor-principal relationship as trust, mutual value, shared belief in interdependency, awareness of the other's repertoire, open and reflective communication, purposeful and focused collaboration, collective enterprise, and stretched leadership:

"My interest in examining the school counselor-principal relationship began developing only a few months into my first year as a high school counselor, when one of my highly innovative and effective assist principals named Matt Militello confessed to me, 'I have never thought a school counselor would know about this stuff or would want to share a lead on it"...The realization that emerged from this experience- that we did not know enough about each other's roles, training and educational values and that a more substantial partnership between us could have a positive impact on the school- shaped our shared interest in exploring and researching these important professional relationships".

Marie Menna Pagliaro, Ph.D., (who received her doctorate from GSE in 1978) has just had four books published by Rowman and Littlefield:

Marie is currently a professional development consultant/coach and higher education liason at the Teacher Center of Central Westchester. She was Director of the Teacher Education Division at Dominican College, Chair of the Marymount College Education Department, Instructor and Supervisor of Student Teachers at Hunter College, and Chair of the Science Department and Teacher of chemistry, general science, and mathematics in the Westchester County public schools.

Attend Employer Information Sessions, Panels, and Workshops. Your early years of graduate school are an excellent time to work on your resume and interview skills, network with employers, and learn about opportunities that interest you.

Students of GSE Doctoral Candidate Win NCTE Achievement Awards

The 2011 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Achievement Awards in Writing winners featured four of Catherine Longmore's (current GSE doctoral candidate in Language, Literacy & Learning) students. Longmore supervises English Language Arts at Syosset High School in Syosset, NY, which was the only school district in the state to have four winners (winners from each state are chosen from over 1,600 total entries from students in all 50 states).

The students, Sophie Anne Chen, Alex Lombardi, Cindy Niu, and Amanda Rosati, received certificates for superior writing from NCTE. The Achievement Awards in Writing are conferred by the National Council of Teachers of English in recognition of excellence in writing by high school juniors. Winners demonstrate writing ability in two forms: first, in a sample of their best writing, in any form or genre, drafted and revised over time; and second, in an impromptu essay on a subject set by the Achievement Awards Advisory Committee and responded to by all candidates for the award in that year.

Congratulations to students and teacher on this achievement!

Alumni News: Franco D'Alessandro Publishes Collection of Plays

Playwright/Author and Fordham alumnus Franco D’Alessandro (FCRH '89, GSE' 03) celebrated the publication of his collection, STRANGER LOVE: Five Short Plays in December 2010. The collection contains published and award-winning plays and a lengthy interview with the playwright. In 2009 D’Alessandro’s poetry chapbook, “Supplications," was a New England Pen nominee.

In addition to being a teacher of drama, writing and literature in a public Brooklyn high school, he is an adjunct professor of drama at three universities and teaches Master Classes in drama internationally. This fall in Los Angeles his play “Gesu, Mary & Joseph” and a new work “Pieces of Anna” will have productions.

Dr. Carlos McCray's (Associate Professor of Educational Leadership, Administration & Policy) recently published Cultural Collision and Collusion: Reflections on Hip-Hop Culture, Values, and Schools has been reviewed by the Teacher's College Record:

"Beachum and McCray's (2011) book...underscores the dire plight of urban youth, particularly African-American males, today. They bring together a wide variety of scholarship to theorize new ways in which this population continues to be under-served/disserved by the educational system and explore conflicts between youth and adult culture in American schools... Some of the greatest strengths in this book are the questions and challenges it poses for educators and those who work with Black youth. It provides both a historical and societal context for the myriad of issues, tensions, and injustices that plague this group."

Alumni In The News: Alphonsus Emeka Ezeoke Demands Improvements To Nigerian Education

Many Nigerians wallow in abject poverty, unable to meet needs such as food, shelter, clothing, medical services, good drinking water, education and transport. The relationship between education, poverty, corruption and leadership is the topic addressed in Dying Education: Necessary Reformation. The Nigerian Case, by Dr.Alphonsus Emeka Ezeoke, who received his doctorate in Administration & Supervision from GSE in 2003.

The Nigerian nation must tap from its pluralism, the author believes, and emphasize the benefits therein. Dr. Ezeoke believes that Nigerians must let the pluralistic nature of the country not be a weakness but a strength, to fathom all problems and jettison hatred. Education is the one, only and surest way to attain the goals of nationhood. Education is the greatest of all reforms, and reformation is necessary for Nigeria.

Dr. Yi Ding, PhD, NCSP (Assistant Professor of School Psychology) published an article entitled, "Effects of Tier-1 Intervention On Letter- Sound Correspondence In A Response-To Intervention Model In First Graders" in the Summer 2011 edition of the National Association of School Psychologists' School Psychology Forum: Research in Practice, in collaboration with graduate student Ryan Taylor. Live from GSE, our Student Ambassador Matt Cardinale, a student in the School Psychology Ph.D. program, has suggested an article from the American Psychological Association's Monitor on Psychology September 2011 issue.

"Closing the Achievement Gap," by Monitor staff member Lea Winerman, examines ways in which educators can minimize the persistent differences in test scores, grades and graduation rates among students of different races, ethnicities and, in some subjects, genders, by having students write essays about meaningful accomplishments in order to decrease negative stereotypes about their race, ethnicity, or gender:

"Educators have been chewing over the problem for decades....[R]ecently, a group of social and cognitive psychologists have come at the problem in a different way. These psychologists' approach is based on the idea that at least some of these academic disparities aren't the result of faulty teaching or broken school systems, but instead spring from toxic stereotypes that cause ethnic-minority and other students to question whether they belong in school and whether they can do well there. While such a major problem might seem to require widespread social change to fix, the psychologists are finding evidence that short, simple interventions can make a surprisingly large difference. Quick classroom exercises that bolster students' resistance to stereotypes and change the way they think about learning can have dramatically out-of-scale effects, these researchers say."

GSE alum, Sarah Noel [FCRH '02 (Psychology), GSE '05 (Mental Health Counseling)] is a licensed Mental Health counselor working with teens and adults, as well as a Person-Centered Topic Expert, publishing monthly online articles for GoodTherapy.org.

In her most recent article, "Hitting The Therapy Wall," Sarah outlines strategies to circumvent the "wall" that many patients experience:

"You may enter therapy with the commitment and determination of a runner who has just begun to train for a marathon. Then, just as suddenly and inexplicably as a runner hits the wall, you may at some point feel unable to move forward in therapy. You may feel like you have painstakingly explored each and every issue that brought you into therapy, but that your life has yet to change and you are no better equipped to make decisions or take actions than when you entered therapy. You have hit the wall."

Alumni In The News: Dr. John Petillo Inaugurated President of Sacred Heart

Under the banner “A Time for New Beginnings,” the inauguration of John J. Petillo, Ph.D (PD and PhD in Counseling Psychology, GSE '76), as the sixth president of Sacred Heart University, will take place on Wednesday, September 21st. The ceremony will follow the University induction of the class of 2015 on the University’s Fairfield campus. Later that day, an inauguration mass will be celebrated in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, followed by a reception for the campus community.

Dr. Petillo, former dean of the John F. Welch College of Business and past chancellor and CEO of Seton Hall University, served as interim president of the University for five months before he was named as the new president in March after an extensive national search.

GSE Student Named Classroom Innovator

Sue Luft, an elementary school teacher at Fox Meadow Elementary School in Scarsdale, NY, and a current Ph.D. student at GSE in Language Literacy and Learning, has been named a classroom innovator in the LoHud Journal News for her unique approach to teaching social studies to her first-graders.

Luft's class held a read-a-thon that raised $500 for Charity: Water, a nonprofit group that helps fund wells and other clean-water solutions in places like Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Malawi. This past school year, her students donated $400 to the cause by getting sponsors for their weekly chores. Along with learning more about complex global issues, she tries to teach them that "as small as we are in this big giant world, you can reach out and help someone so far away."

A big thank you to all new students, current students, faculty and staff who attended New Student Orientation last week at the Lincoln Center campus! We appreciate your participation and are pleased to report that the event was a great success, with nearly 100 new students in attendance.

Representatives from Financial Aid & Scholarships and Student Technology Services were present, and speakers at the event included GSE Dean James Hennessy, Associate Dean Rita Brause, Dr. Bill Baker (President Emeritas of WNET Channel 13, and Claudio Aquaviva Professor of Education and Journalist-in Residence), and Linda Horisk (Assistant Dean of Admissions). The Orientation included a luncheon and opportunitites for new

students to get to know their fellow classmates in group activities, as well as to interact with faculty and current students and have their questions about academics and student life answered.

We welcome all of our new and returning GSE students, and look forward to a wonderful Fall 2011 semester!

Edge4Vets Kick-Off At The Intrepid

Fordham University has launched a new program to help its student-veterans transition into non-military life.

The Edge4Vets program, designed to assist United States military veterans in the difficult adjustment from life soldiering to life in the classroom, gets underway this semester with a series of monthly workshops at Fordham. The program kicked off on August 30 with a special event at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in Midtown Manhattan, attracting some 60 veterans currently enrolled at Fordham. Also attending were representatives from United War Veterans, Iraq Afghanistan Veteran’s of America and the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs.

If you are interested in enrolling in classes as a non-matriculated student at GSE for Fall 2011, In-Person Registration will take place at the Lincoln Center and Westchester campuses on September 6th and 7th, from 1-5pm.

For more information about registration guidelines, click here. Please be sure to bring proof of your undergrad or master's degree (a copy of your transcript or diploma) with you in order to register if this is your first non-matriculated class with us!

GSE Wins $2.5 Million Grant To Place Teachers in Underperforming Schools

When classes begin at five struggling New York City schools next fall, pupils will find a new set of advocates in their corner—Graduate School of Education students and professors. Thanks to a $2.5 million grant from the New York State Education Department, GSE will participate in a new initiative called the Graduate Level Clinically Rich Teacher Preparation Pilot Program.

Twenty-four GSE students will begin receiving instruction from Fordham faculty members beginning next May. That fall, the graduate students will do their coursework in underperforming city schools under the guidance of mentor-teachers.

In her most recent article, "How To Move Beyond Anxiety To Make Major Decisions," she outlines coping strategies for major decision-making moments:

"Many people who find themselves [having to make major life choices] become filled with a paralyzing level of anxiety that renders them unable to make a decision. It is certainly understandable – lots of decisions are tough to make and those that have significant implications for your career, living situation and family are among the toughest. GSE In Inside Fordham: Fulbright Visiting Scholar Florentina Halimi

The Graduate School of Education will welcome to its faculty an accomplished Albanian scholar from Macedonia, Florentina Halimi, Ph.D., who will spend the fall semester teaching and researching as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar.

Halimi, a linguist specializing in English language instruction and acquisition, has chosen Fordham as the host school for her Fulbright research to collaborate with the GSE’s programs in English language learning to study the development of teacher leadership.

In particular, Halimi will take advantage of the resources of the Center for Educational Partnerships, which will enable her to work within several New York City schools and will also allow her to study the teacher-leader training models offered by programs like the Long Island/Westchester Bilingual & ESL Teacher Leadership Academy (LI/W BETLA).
